Cole Cairney had ridden as if the very Devil was after him.

He’d reached the site of the massacre of the dummy wagon and inspected the area thoroughly, and now he had to tell Greeley what he’d found.

He steered his foam-flecked mount into the alley just as Clancy and Abe were helping the undertaker wrap and load the two bodies into a covered flatbed.

Cole didn’t notice in his haste to get to Greeley, but the three men stood and watched as Cole jumped from his horse and hammered on the door of the last shack on the right.

‘Hmm,’ Abe said as he stood upright.

‘What?’ Clancy asked.

‘Fella seemed mighty anxious, there,’ Abe replied. ‘Didn’t know the old Stoner place had been sold.’

‘Well, you don’t know everything,’ Luther grumbled. ‘Let’s git this last one loaded, time is—’

‘Money, yeah I know,’ Abe said. ‘There ain’t much goes on I don’t know about,’ he added, rubbing his stubbled chin.

They loaded the second body and without preamble, Luther climbed aboard the wagon and drove off, shouting over his shoulder, ‘I’ll bury ’em tomorrow.’ And with that, he was gone.

‘Maybe I’ll check that shack out,’ Clancy said.

‘I’d go to the bank first,’ Abe advised. ‘No sense in creating waves unnecessarily.’

‘Yeah, good point, Abe,’ Clancy said as he checked the ground where the two men were killed. ‘Nothing to look at here. Too many busybodies trampled all over the place.’
